Interview
with Karen Gurwitz,
Founder of Mothers & Menus: |
|
"When
people ask me how I thought of Mothers & Menus,
I tell them I was inspired by my daughter - though
she was only 6 weeks old at the time." says
Karen, who founded Mothers & Menus in her
mind in February of 2001 with the birth of her
first daughter, Nika, and brought it to existence
in September of 2003 following the birth of her
second child, Sophie. In February of 2005, Karen
got to try Mothers & Menus as a client with
the birth of her son, Ethan - and was delighted
with the service!
Karen spent over a decade as a media and investor
relations professional in the technology industry.
Prior to that, she worked as a speechwriter and
personal aide to a cabinet minister in the Israeli
government. "I enjoyed my work, alot. Especially
the dynamics of communicating with people all
day long."

Personal
quest - |
|
Born and
raised in Montreal, Canada, Karen earned her degree
in International Business from Concordia University.
"I never studied nutrition, but because I battled
with my weight, I had been on a personal quest to
find a healthy, balanced way of eating. As a result,
I became a very educated layexpert - and was the
primary resource for friends and family with questions
about healthy food choices." |
|
But after
the birth of her firstborn, she noted that she was
confused about what to eat - torn between wanting
to lose her pre-pregnancy weight, and trying to
eat well enough so that she could nurse her baby. |
|
|
|
|
"It
was ridiculous, I kept thinking - there has got
to be some way to just have someone tell me what
is good for me, and while they're at it - make it
for me, put it in a box, and leave it at my doorstep." |
|
That's
how Mothers & Menus came to be. Today, Karen
brings all of her experience to running Mothers
& Menus: her business expertise, her knowledge
about nutrition, her love of motherhood, and her
desire to communicate. "I love talking to my
new moms - hearing their experiences, and answering
any concerns that I can. I get excited every time
I hear about the birth of a new baby - that never
fades for me." |
|
Priceless
service - |
|
Asked about
the cost of Mothers & Menus, Karen comments,
"It's incredible that we spend so much effort,
energy and money to prepare for our wedding day,
and yet we see the birthing and postpartum process
as something that inevitably involves suffering
and tolerance. With support systems like Mothers
& Menus, you can go beyond just surviving those
first few weeks - to enjoy them with energy and
excitement - now that is priceless! Ultimately,
it's about taking care of yourself and putting yourself
first so that you can then take care of your baby." |
